The
Flying Machine, built by four of Niemi's artistic crewmen, is
a veritable work of art, even though it is made from steel pipes,
scraps of metal, discarded machine parts and leftover latex. The
Flying Machine looks like a whimsical and beautiful piece of sculpture.
The size of an ultra light plane, it has a long, reptilian tail.
Where a plane's nose would be it has a smiling dragon's face.
It has semi-transparent, bat-like, membrane wings and landing
gears that look like two big paws fitted with recessed wheels.
Its tail and wings can be moved remotely and at least three people
can fit inside it.
In the six years since he's graduated with a Diploma in Scenography
from The National Theatre School of Canada, Niemi has worked on
nine feature films as Art Director and Assistant Art Director,
among them Possible Worlds, The Red Violin, Barney's Great Adventure
and Afterglow. He has also been busy on television movies and
series including The Ghost of Dickens's Past and The Hunger. He
became Production Designer on the TV series All Souls before he
came on board The Neverending Story.
