When Xayide enters the Woodlanders'
village on horseback lead by her Dark Knights, she wears a chain
mail skirt and a moulded black leather bodice embossed with silver
and copper. On her head she wears a leather and copper crown decorated
with bird claws, some real and some moulded from plastic. On her
hands are silver chain mail gloves but one has a single, long,
claw like finger. When she points with it, it puts terror into
the hearts of the Woodland villagers.
One of Xayide's other costumes has tall, black feathers around
the neck.
Amerindian traditional clothing inspired the Woodlanders' costumes
but April added fantastical elements to the basic buckskin shirts,
pants and skirts. She attached deerskin overskirts and capes dyed
blue, red and yellow with coloured fringes. She made headpieces
from dyed horsehair and fake hair and decorated them with beads,
feathers and seashells. The elder Woodlanders wear large seashell
necklaces for added effect.
The Childlike Empress's many costumes are princess-like but also
otherworldly. Her riding coat is made from Japanese silk and dyed
blue and coral. Rows and rows of iridescent crystal beads top
her pale peach dress. She also wears bracelets of crystal from
shoulders to wrists.
Cairon, The Childlike Empress's advisor, has a cloak of blue brocade
and a velvet pantsuit with a Zebra-print. His head is decorated
with an Etruscan-like armour headdress with a Zebra mane at the
back.
April says that she researched different historical periods and
ethnic motifs. The Minions, for example, who are the Childlike
Empress's handmaidens, wear sheer pants and gowns, inspired by
India. The Tatterdemalions, who are fugitive Woodlander children,
wear headdresses of beads and feathers inspired by Tibet.
