Carl Coreander, who starts Bastian on his journey of the imagination into the world of Fantasia, wears costumes that reflect his travels and his status as sage and mystic. They have Chinese, Japanese, South American, South-East Asian and African motifs.

When April planned Fly Girl's unusual costume, she looked to the early days of flight at the turn of the 19th century. Her aviator's helmet looks a bit like Emelia Erhart's, except that Fly Girl's has two pigtails of frizzed gold/red hair sticking out over the ears. Her leather doublet has a flared waist, a look that was popular in the 17th century. But her kinetic, orange/yellow/black striped tights are so modern they look futuristic. The costume is topped off by a full-length leather coat, decorated with gold leafs.

April is an award-winning costume designer who created costumes for more than 25 major features and television films and series. She won a Genie Award for Costume design for her work in Grey Owl and The Bay Boy, and a Gemini Award for Best Costumes for her creations in Million Dollar Babies. She was also nominated for a Golden Satellite Award for her costumes in the Red Violin. Some of her other film and television credits include The Hound of the Baskervilles, Audrey Hepburn, Waking the Dead, Mother Night, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Children of a Lesser God and Agnes of God
